I spent the day in the garden today with a friend, winter sunshine, mulching, planting, fertilizing, planning new projects over a cup of tea. A walk down to the new café on the corner, a chat with the neighbour. Like food for the soul to spend the day in this way. Happily at home.
As we were talking about companion planting I reached for a good old book to help - Marjorie Bligh’s A-Z of Gardening. Marjorie lived in Devonport and this book was first published in 1990. So charming that on almost every page she has included her own little poems and aphorisms like:
“Happiness is a product of activity”
“In nature there are neither rewards or punishments – there are only consequences”
“Life is like a garden in many little ways
Contentment cannot flourish if gloom is all you raise
Plant the seed of kindness whenever you may go
Then, fertilized by common sense, friendships bound to grow.”
“What sunshine is to flowers, smiles are to humanity”
I just love them – some are like Zen koans that just can’t be explained, others so sweet, others contain the wisdom of the world.
